Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden becomes World No. 1 pair for Men’s Doubles
Trending-Viral – Rohan Bopanna with his Australian partner Matthew Ebden defeated their Italian opponents Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, both from Italy 7-6 (7-0), 7-5 to win Australian Open 2024 Men’s Doubles Title today on 27th Jan 2024 in Melbourne, Australia.
Rohan Bopanna, 43 years old, from Bangalore India, holds World ATP Rank 3 in Men’s Doubles , became the second Indian (1st was Leander Paes in 2012 with Radek Stepanek from Czeck Republic) to win this title. He became the oldest major winner.
Matthew Ebden, 36 years, Born in Durban, South Africa, lives in Australia holds World ATP Rank 4 in Men’s Doubles.
ATP – Association of Tennis Professionals – is the Governing Body of the men’s professional tennis circuits.
On the other side, it was S. Bolelli and A. Vavassori from Italy.
Simone Bolelli, 38 years old from Italy holds 56 World Rank in Men’s Doubles. Andrea Vavassori from Italy holds 153 Rank in Men’s Singles and 45 Rank in Men’s Doubles. He is of 28 years old from Italy.
Prize money of AUD 365000 each will be paid to both the winners
The winning pair is going to receive a prize money of AUS$ 365000 (i.e. around INR 20 millions) each. For Rohan Bopanna, his family as well as for his fans and supporters, it was surely an emotional win as Rohan also becomes the oldest major winner in 43 years of age. He was on the verge of giving up on the sports just a few years back. Bopanna smiled and said “I say I’m at level 43, not age 43.”
Rohan’s earlier won important titles, now set to receive Padma Shri award
Rohan earlier lifted the mixed doubles trophy at the 2017 French Open, alongside Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski. With his winning partner, at the start of last year, Bopanna and Ebden won ATP titles at Doha and Indian Wells Masters before stepping it up in Slams.
He is also among other 6 Indian sportsmen selected by Government of India for Padma Shri Award, which is conferred to Indians for their outstanding contributions in any field.
Bopanna thanked wife Supriya and daughter Tridha
While speaking at the presentation ceremony, Rohan Bopanna thanked his wife recalling the day he sent her a video message of his decision to retire.
“My beautiful wife, Supriya, & my daughter, Tridha… thank you for all the support, all the love. I know a couple years ago I sent her a video message & said ‘I’m gonna call it a day.’ Because I wasn’t winning matches at all. I went 5 months without winning a match. I thought that was gonna be the end of my journey. Perseverance inside me just kept me going. I really changed so many things & found a wonderful partner.”

Rohan and Supriya had a love marriage after dating each other for almost two years, now married for 12 years. Supriya is 34-year-old and a psychologist by profession. The couple also have a daughter, Tridha Bopanna.
