Since the first Sun Bowl played on New Year day January 1, 1935, as a fundraising event for a local service club, the game has grown into El Paso’s number one national attraction.

They entered the game with a 8–4 record.
This was Oregon State’s third Sun Bowl, that it lost to Notre Dame. Previously, they have 2 wins to their credit – in 2006 and 2008.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Fighting Irish entered the game with a 9–3 record, ranked 16th in the College Football Playoff rankings.
This win was Notre Dame’s second Sun Bowl, the Fighting Irish previously won in 2010.
The expectations from most of the analysts were in their favor, thanks to their strong defense where opponent team struggled to adapt.
The 32-point win for the Fighting Irish is the largest margin of victory in school history in a bowl game and the largest in a Sun Bowl since 2013( previously UCLA had defeated Virginia Tech with 42-12 score).
Special credits to The Fighting Irish, Steve Angeli, who completed 7 of 9 passes for 121 yards in the first half and finished the game with 232 yards passing in his debut as his first career start match.
“This is a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Angeli said, “but it’s really not about me. It’s about these guys around me. All those guys that have been in that room that have nurtured me, especially Sam Hartman. He’s done a great job of teaching me the ways and allowing me to come out here and have this opportunity.”
Sun Bowl game is a college football bowl game officially known as the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, after the mascot for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes cereal since Aug 2019 replacing Hyundai Motor Company (2010-2018).
